The budget has rightly been overshadowed by the strikes and protests of the labour movement, not least because the announcement has elicited comment from the Office of Budget Responsibility that we will see the largest fall in living standards since 1956.

Energy supplier Centrica is expecting an almost eightfold increase in net profit. This at a time where 34% of adults in Britain face a choice between ‘heating or eating’ due, among other things, to a twofold increase in energy prices in the last year.
