WPB SNP tyrants in tartan meeting July 2020

Tune in to our livestream on YouTube, Facebook or Twitter for a weekly public meeting. This week: The SNP, tyrants in tartan.

As the devastation of British industry has been accompanied by the slow and then accelerating dismantling of Britain’s welfare state – access for workers to social housing, decent education and health provision, benefits, legal aid, libraries, parks and other community, cultural and leisure facilities – poorer workers across Britain have abandoned their former loyalty to the Labour party, which they rightly feel has no interest in helping to solve their problems.

In the absence of decent working-class leadership, the nationalist demagogues in Scotland have stepped in to fill the void, preaching ‘national unity’ against ‘the English’ as a way of distracting workers from their real enemy: the British imperialist ruling class, consisting of Scottish and English capitalists alike.

With Labour so clearly in the camp of neoliberal imperialism, the nationalists have taken the opportunity to dress themselves up in ‘progressive’ colours by appearing to be protecting the NHS and education (ie, privatising them more slowly), and these small sops to workers have persuaded many wishful thinkers into believing that an independent Scotland would be well on the way to becoming a socialist paradise.

In fact, the state of ‘neverendum’ in Scottish politics as the nationalists demand endlessly their right to re-run the ‘once in a lifetime’ 2014 vote on independence, is serving to obscure the very real problems faced by Scottish workers, problems that will only be made worse if Scotland breaks away from the rest of Britain and tries to ‘go it alone’ as an insignificant member of the European imperialist EU bloc.

George Galloway will address the meeting, and members of the Workers Party will be able to log in and make contributions or ask questions via zoom.
